Introducing Bargate Wellbeing Services: A Different Approach to Psychological Wellbeing
We're excited to share some important news: Thrive Psychological Wellbeing Services is becoming Bargate Wellbeing Services.
This isn't just a change of name. It marks the next chapter in our mission to support people whose needs fall through the gaps in mental health care and to build something genuinely different in how trauma-informed, neuroinclusive support is delivered locally in Southampton and beyond.
At Bargate Wellbeing we believe that good mental health support isn't about asking, "What's wrong with you?" It's about asking, "What's happened to you?" and "What do you need to thrive?"
Why this matters
Mental health support has never been more needed. Every year, around one in four people experience a mental health difficulty; around one in seven people are neurodivergent and many more are living with the lasting effects of trauma.
Yet despite growing awareness, many people are unable to access adequate support; some don't meet the threshold for specialist mental health services, others receive support that focuses on symptoms rather than understanding the person and many workplaces genuinely want to support their people, but aren't always equipped with the knowledge, confidence or tools to do so. We believe there is another way.
Our vision
At Bargate Wellbeing Services, we're building a service that sees the whole person. Everything we do is grounded in two simple principles:
Trauma-informed practice: recognising that people's experiences shape how they think, feel, communicate and respond to the world.
Neuro-inclusive practice: understanding that different brains are not problems to fix, but differences to understand, support and enable.
When these principles are combined, something powerful happens:
- People don't simply receive therapy, they feel understood.
- Managers don't just learn about wellbeing, they learn how to create environments where people can genuinely thrive.
- Counsellors don't just develop skills, they become part of a community committed to continually improving psychological care.
Three connected services. One shared purpose.
At Bargate we offer support in three ways because we believe that improving mental health happens by strengthening the entire system.
- Community Counselling: Compassionate, relational counselling for adults, couples and young people, delivered by experienced therapists with particular expertise in trauma and neurodivergence.
- Workplace Wellbeing: We help organisations move beyond generic wellbeing initiatives, offering trauma-informed and neuro-inclusive counselling, leadership development, training and consultancy, because wellbeing isn't just about helping people when they reach crisis, it's about creating workplace environments that mean fewer people reach crisis in the first place.
- Learning & Professional Development: Helping develop the next generation of practitioners through CPD, reflective practice and specialist training that bridges research with real-world therapeutic practice.
Why organisations are becoming part of the solution
Mental ill health now costs UK employers an estimated £51 billion every year through sickness absence, presenteeism and staff turnover. However organisations are uniquely placed to make a difference to employee wellbeing, resulting in healthier, happier staff.
When organisations understand the impact of trauma and the importance of neuro-inclusivity psychological safety becomes part of everyday culture. This results in teams that:
- Perform better.
- Support each other
- Are likely to stay with the organisation longer
That's why we're invested in helping organisations become places where people can do their best work without compromising their wellbeing.
What this means for existing clients
If you're already working with us, very little changes. The counsellors you know, the care you receive, the values that underpin our work all remain exactly the same.
The difference is that we're expanding our expertise, our partnerships and our ambition so we can support more people in more ways.
This is just the beginning
We're excited to continue growing a service that helps individuals, organisations and professionals move beyond simply managing mental health towards creating environments where people can genuinely flourish.
We look forward to sharing that journey with you.
